FESTIVAL OF IDEAS - JUNE 22-25th 2017

Welcome to Reckless Theatre’s Festival of Ideas – more than 25 specific workshops over the span of 4 days. The instructors are improvisers from NYC and other parts of the world. They have volunteered their time to share methods and ideas in the pursuit of connectivity and growing this art form. These workshops are crafted to address a single topic over a short burst of time. All workshops are free for active students and only $5 for those new to Reckless. No application necessary – show up at Reckless 527 W 29th Street for a slot and sign up for any workshop you’d like to take part in. Please come 20 minutes before the workshops begin to better your chances of participating. For those of you who have arrived too late to sign up, most of the workshops will allow you to observe. Come study, share, learn, play and jam with us. All attendees are invited to stick around and watch shows.

Rhyme and Why it Doesn’t have to Run Things
with Douglas Widick

Let’s face it, rhyming is one of the joys of musical improv, but often our rhymes are dictated by something that made sense, and then proceeds to make sense no longer because we force a rhyme with it. In this 90 minute workshop symposium, Douglas Widick from Blank! The Musical and North Coast will cover common rhyming pitfalls, and how to stay on game whether that means abandoning the rhyme entirely or not.

Get A Move On

Improve your physicality in all areas of your work through exercises that explore dance, stage combat, and overall body movement. Wear clothes that you can move and sweat in!

Follow the Fun with Seamless Edits
with Rachel Rosenthal

Let’s follow the fun! In this workshop, students focus on discovery rather than invention. Taking improv from the purest form of “play” and expanding on any moment that we found genuinely fun, joyful or inspiring. Goodbye sweep edits! Using a catalog of seamless edits, non-verbal communication, and pure inspiration, the group will start to learn how every single moment of our scene matters and how any one could be a stepping stone to the next discovery. This is a high energy improv experience sure to leave you in hysterics.

Break The Rules

Improvisors are meant to surprise and break rules. Learn to break through the 4th wall and not only surprise the audience, but surprise yourself with what you can do when the entire world is your stage. There should be no limitations to what you can do when its all made up.

How to Make a Good Podcast

We’ll talk about the technical side of podcasting – from setup to publishing – as well as what makes a good podcast work. Everyone with a microphone can make one, but what should you put into practice to entertain with only your voice? Let’s talk about it.

A workshop on how to construct characters organically, one small bit at a time. If you don’t do voices, work with your spine, or easily view through world through someone else’s lense, this will help get you on that path. If you already do those things, this will help you get there faster and with greater purpose.

Silence

Load every moment. Allow a look to speak volumes. Create tension in the air and heat with your scene partners. Use silence as a valuable tool to create dimension in your scene work.

The Abyss

Improvised Play

We focus on the grounded style of play and reading your partner within scenework and introduce basic narrative techniques. All participants will be involved in drills and scene starts, but some improvisers may be used as examples of deeper scenework.

Organic Transitions and Edits

Enhance your play and maintain forward momentum by blending each scene into the next.  This workshop takes what you create and applies the Reckless Theatre philosophies of connectivity, confidence, and ensemble to facilitate seamless transitions and edits.

Sing Out, Louise

This workshop will focus on confidence in the fundamentals of musical improv. Bold moves make a musical set hum along, hone the skills to take center stage. We will cover everything from initiating high energy dance numbers to developing lyrical metaphors in this 90 minute workshop.

Punch Up Your Script in Your Own Voice

There’s no single path to take when writing. You must learn to rely on your own ideas and voice to create something new and funny. Learn how to punch up your script to get the laughs you’re after while fine-tuning your own comedic voice.

Learn how to match energies and use its momentum to make discoveries to super charge your scenes, make bold moves with big stakes and high energy, say “yes” in huge ways with more than just words, and attack the stage with total agreement and zero fear. Shut Up and Make Stuff (producing a web series)

You want to make a kick-ass web series but you just aren’t sure what the next steps are to get it made and get it made right. Or maybe you have a vague idea of what to do to get it done but you haven’t and it’s been weeks. Bring whatever you’ve got (scripts, treatments, concepts or just a burning desire to create) and Aaron and Ashley will help you break down actionable goals that will turn your idea into a tangible piece (before someone else beats you to it). Dramatic acting and character acting are both wonderful art forms! They also weren’t developed for sketch comedy! Learn how to work within the framework of game-based sketches, and how to maximize your impact in scenes and improve the functioning of the sketch as a whole.

Confidence With An Audience

Learn how to tap into the pulse of the audience by developing your stage presence not only as an improviser but as an entertainer.

Narrative Genre Solo Shows
with Dan Titmuss
SUNDAY 11:00a – STUDIO

No props, no other actors, no tech, no problem. Create that blockbuster feeling without a blockbuster cast, crew and budget. This solo-show workshop will look at the tricks and hacks that allow performers to make big, bold stage pictures when it’s only one actor on stage – how to make that one actor feel like 20, and hypnotize the audience into seeing things that aren’t there.

How to Become What You Pretend

In improv we can be anything or anybody we want and our job is to make believe. Often we are in doubt if we convey what we pretend to be. Then we overact, play clichés or stereotypes. In this workshop we will learn to trust our own choices and prove that we can convey tons of information to our scene partner and audience with a minimum of action.

Soloprov – The Joy of Surprising Yourself

Say yes to yourself! This workshop will explore how learning to think of yourself as your own safety net can liberate you in your ensemble work and also help you to be a better, more supportive scene partner. When you shut down the thinking part of your brain and give over to the flowing, reactionary ideas that come, you can experience the pleasure of actually having to treat your own mind as a collaborator with multiple points of view, rather than as a singular concept-generating entity and editor.
